CALLING ALL GOLFERS: BRANCHVILLE ROTARY CLUB'S 2023 CHILI OPEN GOLF TOURNEY ANNOUNCED
Submitted by Eli Benz (ELB@elenorabenz.com

Seriously?  Yes, all you died-in-the-wool golfers, we need you next January to golf in the 21st Annual Chili Open Golf Tournament.

Every year, on the Saturday the week before the Super Bowl, Branchville Rotary Club partners with United Way of Northern NJ to put on its famous midwinter golf outing known as the Chili Open.  Our club is in charge of feeding the golfers and volunteers both breakfast and lunch.

How do we do that?  Simple.  We go out the month before the event and solicit food donations from all of our local restaurants.  Food, beverages, desserts, we get it all.  Then, on the day before the event, we set up at the Sussex County Fairgrounds and create a smooth-running food line.  Breakfast is self-serve bagels and beverages.  Lunch is a whole other story.

This year we served up traditional chili, mild, medium, and hot, white chili (a new addition this year), Italian favorites like baked ziti, stuffed shells, meatballs, eggplant parm, and other delicacies such as shepherd’s pie and sausage and peppers.  Lots of salad too, with dinner rolls and fresh baked baguettes.  The service tables were groaning with all the selections.  And the attendees ate and then ate some more.  It was a freezing cold day, so the hot food was very welcome.  As were the delicious desserts.

Our club members worked on the service line and, as usual, had a ball interacting with the golfers, volunteers, and each other.  After the event we stayed on to help with cleanup.  For this service, United Way pays our Foundation a handsome fee.  And a good time was had by all!
