Branchville RC Prepares for NJ State Fair (Aug. 7 -14)
Submitted by Ellie Benz (ELB@elenorabenz.com)

Hello again from Branchville Rotary!

The Fair is coming and Branchville Rotary is in full gear in preparation for our booth selling delicious roast beef and turkey sandwiches.  On Saturday, July 17th a group of nine hard workers from the club gathered at the booth to take off its winter gear and ready the physical plant for the upcoming 8 days of the NJ State Fair, Sussex County Farm & Horse Show.

The Fair runs from August 7th to the 14th.  Our club is in its fourth decade of serving food on the midway.  We have customers coming back year after year saying that it is their favorite “non-fried” midway food.  This is our club’s main fund raiser, and it is all hands-on board to make it a great success.  We break down into three main committees:  Operations; Food; and Buildings & Grounds.  The booth is staffed 12+ hours a day during the Fair.  All club members work their chosen shifts, and we have many family members, friends of Rotary, and other volunteers to complete the staff.

It’s a lot of person-hours, but our members will tell you that it is fun and a great place to get to know our members and friends.  Lifelong friendships develop and everyone has a favorite shift to work.  Each year, we invite the sitting District Governor to join us for a shift.  DG Shelby is no exception and will be there on the first Saturday.  We use the booth to tell the world about what our club does to improve life in our community and around the world.

Mentors have been assigned for all new members.  The goal is to have the mentor and new member become “club buddies” and maybe getting together for a cup of coffee or an adult beverage outside of Rotary and engage each other with good discussions.  In September, our club will hold several “Fireside Chats” as a new member orientation tool.  The Chats have been very successful in the past and we are looking forward to good results.

If you find yourself at the Fair, be sure to stop by to say hello!

Elizabeth RC presents PHF to Gary Horan
Submitted by Ken Richuso (krichuso86@comcast.net)

The Elizabeth Rotary Club presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Gary Horan, President/CEO of Trinitas Regional Medical Center on July 7.

Gary was recognized for his leadership during the COVID 19 pandemic.

The presentation was made by Club President Ken Richuso and PDG Ray Freaney. Trinitas received three ventilators last year as a result of a Rotary Grant initiated by PDG Ray Freaney of the Madison RC and PDG Dr. Michael Hart of the Westfield RC.

The Elizabeth Club also made a $2,500 donation to the Trinitas Foundation.

Somerset Hills RC to hold 5th Annual Rotary Family Fun Fest (Aug 29)
Submitted by Lauren Carpenter (lauren@carpsonline.net)

The Rotary Club of the Somerset Hills (formerly Bernardsville) is holding its annual Car Show on Sunday August 29 from 11:00 – 3:00.  (Raindate is Sunday September 12.)

This is our main fundraiser for the year.  It will be held at the Somerset Hills YMCA at 140 Mt. Airy Road in Basking Ridge.

We partner with the YMCA on several things each year, and this is one of them. The YMCA hosts their Family Fun Day to promote the Y at the same event, and the proceeds from the car show benefit both organizations.  (The Y provides some fun activities for families and children – alas, no golf!)

The winning car in each category judged will receive a trophy.  We will have food trucks this year instead of our own home cooking (due to COVID hesitation).

Here’s the event flyer:
